Shanna MacDonald (President/Treasurer)

Devoted parents to two crazy wieners, two equally crazy felines and a tiny human, Shanna and her husband Jeff have been active volunteers since the spring of 2013. When she is not throwing a ball or hiking through the woods, she is either in her craft room or in the kitchen creating good things for both the two legged and four legged.
Shanna works for Parks Canada in the Protected Areas Establishment Branch and works towards expanding our National Park and National Marine Conservation Area system in Canada.

Patricia Lemmon (Applications Coordinator)

Patricia Lemmon (Paddi) lives in Truro, NS, with her husband Mike (also a huge animal lover), 3 dachshunds; Digby, Waldo, and Heidi, and two cats; Rudy and Eddy.  Paddi developed her love of animals from her mother at an early age.  She volunteered for several years at the Colchester SPCA.  Recently retired after 31 years working in the education field has allowed her to devote more time to the rescue.  She first started as a volunteer, then foster, and is now our Applications Coordinator.  She loves art, painting, pottery, and has recently started a drawing/sketching course.

Cindy Harrison (Foster (NS) and Event Coordinator)

Cindy currently resides in Truro, NS, with three dogs and two cats: Fenwick, Trixie, Abby, Freddy and Zoey. She became involved in the rescue in 2014 when she adopted Trixie from ACDR. Then less than a year later, came Fenwick. She is passionate about ACDR and looks forward in helping the rescue in any way that she can. She believes every animal deserves the chance to be healthy and to be loved.

Sallie McDonald (Surrender Coordinator and IT Coordinator)

Sallie joined the ACDR as a volunteer in 2015, after falling in love with this special breed of dog, and began helping out at fundraising events.  In the Fall of 2017, she became a director with the added role of IT Coordinator.  Sallie is a small business owner, with a passion for sewing and crafting, and loves helping Dachshunds in need.  She resides in Wellington, NS, with her husband, two wonderful kids, and four adorable Dachshunds.

Michael Merkel (Vice President/Fundraising Coordinator)

There has never been a time in Mike's life that didn't have a pet in it.  From the early, ill-fated attempts of his father keeping a squirrel, followed by years with two dogs (a miniature poodle and a mid sized mutt), other cats and dogs along the way, until now, where him and his wife, Paddi live with three Dachshunds, two cats and more often than not, a foster dog.  Being the latest edition to the board was a natural progression, following in Paddi's footsteps.  Mike is still waiting for a wirehair Dachshund to join the family.

Marianne Lohnes (Volunteer Coordinator) - on temporary leave

Marianne Lohnes is a Graphic Artist by trade and worked in that field for over 22 years until, at age 43, she became a career firefighter with the City of Halifax. She retired in June 2018, after 13 ½ years of firefighting. She continues to volunteer as a firefighter with her local fire department. Marianne currently resides in her childhood home in Halfway Brook, NS with her husband, Kevin and their five miniature dachshunds (one of whom is paralyzed and a permanent ACDR foster) and one cat. Marianne began volunteering with ACDR in 2012 as a foster volunteer until 2019 when she became Volunteer Coordinator. She loves anything miniature and incorporates it into her craftwork - designing and sewing dolls and their clothing, building dollhouses. So, it’s no wonder she loves dachshunds! She has been in love with the breed since she met her very first ‘wiener dog’ when she was a young child.
