Where We Adopt

ACDR adopts to NB, NS, PEI & NL only. Matches are not based on proximity to the dog, but on the best fit for the dog.

How Adoption Works

We take our time to get the match right. Here's what to expect from application to adoption day.

  1. 1

    Apply.

Fill out an adoption application. Let us know if you're interested in a particular dog, or whether you'd like to be considered for any dog that comes into care.

  2. 2

    Review.

Our Director of Adoptions reviews every application and draws up a short list of the homes best suited to each dog's needs.

  3. 3

    Decision.

Our Board of Directors then reviews the short list and decides which family best meets the dog's requirements.

  4. 4

    Home visit.

If you are selected, a volunteer arranges a home visit. We are looking for safety, dachshund knowledge and care, and we will ask a few simple questions. When the dog's location allows, we try to bring them along.

  5. 5

    Three-week trial.

If the home visit goes well and you'd like to proceed, we set a time to begin your three-week trial. If at any point it isn't working out, you simply return the dog to ACDR. If all goes well, the dog is officially adopted when the trial ends.

  6. 6

    Welcome home.

Once the adoption is complete, we transfer all of the dog's medical information to your vet.

Rocky

Hi everyone, I'm Rocky! My biggest wish is to find my fur-ever family.

I'm a Border Collie / Dachshund / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Cocker Spaniel mix with a big heart and lots of love to give. My favourite things in the world are belly rubs, head scratches, cuddling on the couch, and being close to my humans. I love people SO much.

I'm a pretty smart guy, too. I know lots of commands, I'm eager to please, and I've recently discovered that agility classes are really fun. I love learning new things and having activities that keep my brain busy. I also enjoy walks, fetch, tug-of-war, and showing off what a good boy I am.

I'm fully housebroken and working hard on my leash manners. Sometimes I get a little excited when I see large dogs on walks, but my foster family has been helping me learn and improve every day.

I should tell you something important about me. I get really sad and anxious when my people leave. I love my humans so much that being alone can feel scary for me. Crates make me even more stressed, so I'd really love a home where someone is around most of the time, works from home, or could take me along during the day. I promise I'd make a fantastic coworker and loyal best friend.

My foster family has been helping me build confidence with short periods alone and yummy peanut butter Kongs, and I'm trying really hard. I'm also learning to enjoy car rides; if we start with short trips, I'll settle once I know we're going somewhere fun.

What I really want is someone who will love me forever and never give up on me. Once I trust you, I'll love you with my whole heart.

Smart and eager to learn Loving, playful, and gentle Professional cuddler Loves walks, agility, and games Working on confidence Needs routine and reassurance Gets anxious when left alone

Due to limited resources, only applications that fit a dog's needs will be contacted for a potential adoption trial. If you already have an application on file, email daxrescue.ns@gmail.com to be considered for Rocky rather than reapplying.

Not Quite Ready Yet

These are ACDR's most recent rescues. They are not yet ready for adoption. Once they've been vetted, settled into foster care, and are ready for their fur-ever home, you'll see them here.

Don't see your match? Send an application anyway and tell us you'd like to be considered for any dog that comes into care.

Compassionate Care

Home for Life

Some of our dogs will never need an adoption page, because they have already found their forever with us. Through our Compassionate Care program, ACDR commits to a dog for the whole of their life: every vet visit, every meal, everything they need.

Our IVDD Warrior

Frankie

Brave on four wheels.

Frankie is our IVDD Warrior. Intervertebral disc disease took the use of his back legs, but never his spirit: he zooms through every day in his wheelchair with his whole heart out front.

As a Compassionate Care Foster, Frankie will remain in our care for the rest of his life. We cover his veterinary care, his food, and every other necessity for as long as he needs it. He is not waiting for a home. He is already home with us, and your support is what keeps his wheels turning.
