Where We Adopt

ACDR adopts to NB, NS, PEI & NL only. Matches are not based on proximity to the dog, but on the best fit for the dog.

How Adoption Works

We take our time to get the match right. Here's what to expect from application to adoption day.

  1. 1

    Apply.

Fill out an adoption application. Let us know if you're interested in a particular dog, or whether you'd like to be considered for any dog that comes into care.

  2. 2

    Review.

Our Director of Adoptions reviews every application and draws up a short list of the homes best suited to each dog's needs.

  3. 3

    Decision.

Our Board of Directors then reviews the short list and decides which family best meets the dog's requirements.

  4. 4

    Home visit.

If you are selected, a volunteer arranges a home visit. We are looking for safety, dachshund knowledge and care, and we will ask a few simple questions. When the dog's location allows, we try to bring them along.

  5. 5

    Three-week trial.

If the home visit goes well and you'd like to proceed, we set a time to begin your three-week trial. If at any point it isn't working out, you simply return the dog to ACDR. If all goes well, the dog is officially adopted when the trial ends.

  6. 6

    Welcome home.

Once the adoption is complete, we transfer all of the dog's medical information to your vet.

Rocky

Okay, let's try this again, because somehow this amazing boy is still waiting for his forever family.

Rocky may not be your typical dachshund, but what he is, is nothing short of amazing! Rocky is a mix of Border Collie, Dachshund, Terrier and Cocker Spaniel, and we think there's plenty of Doxie in this boy's heart.

Rocky is incredibly smart and eager to please. Give him something to learn and he's all in! And speaking of learning, Rocky was fortunate to have some sessions with Chalkmaster Dave, working on his basic leash manners.

While Rocky still has some reactivity toward other dogs on leash, he's learning to listen, respond to guidance and correct his behaviour. We're so grateful to Dave for the time, patience and knowledge he's shared with Rocky, helping him learn and grow.

Rocky can be anxious when left alone for long periods, so he'll do best with a family who can provide plenty of companionship and continue working on building his confidence. Someone who can take him to work or is at home with him often would be ideal.

Special announcement! Thanks to a generous, anonymous sponsor, part of Rocky's adoption fee has been covered, reducing it from $400 to $200. The sponsor is unable to adopt Rocky themselves, but they adore him and want to help his future family with their adoption. Such kindness and generosity!

Loyal Loving and smart Loves agility, walks, and games Working on leash manners Building confidence alone Best with someone home often

Applications for Rocky are open. Due to limited resources, only applications that fit Rocky's needs will be contacted for a potential adoption trial. If you already have an application on file, email daxrescue.ns@gmail.com to be considered for Rocky rather than reapplying.

Duchess

Hi, I'm Duchess! I'm around 10 to 12 years old, although my missing teeth make it impossible to know for sure. I'm definitely a senior, and I've got some special needs, but I have so much love to give!

I love food: fruit, veggies, kibble, wet food. Honestly, I'm not particularly fussy! I'm a grazer, so I prefer to eat when I feel like it rather than sticking to a strict schedule. I absolutely love car rides and I'm a good little walker on leash.

I do have some things my forever family will need to understand. My knees aren't very good, so I can't jump up or down from furniture and I need a comfortable bed on the floor. I also have significant vision loss with very limited depth perception, so stairs are especially dangerous for me. I sometimes trip over things and may put my nose right against your legs to figure out who you are. Because of this, I need a safe, predictable home where my surroundings can be kept clear and accessible. And I am pretty much deaf. For these reasons, children 12+ who are aware of my needs and are understanding are best suited for me.

I have allergies and take medication every evening with dinner to help manage them. I'm doing much better with my house training, but I still need someone who understands my cues and takes me outside regularly.

I'm a bit of a barker, so apartment living wouldn't be a good fit for me. I can be quite protective of my home. Visitors can be challenging because I bark when people arrive and may start again whenever they move around. I eventually settle, but I need a family who understands that this is part of who I am and is willing to manage it patiently.

What I'm looking for is pretty simple: a quiet, loving home where I can spend my golden years feeling safe, cherished and very, very loved.

If you're looking for a little senior shadow with a big personality and an even bigger heart, maybe I'm the girl you've been waiting for.

Good with dogs Sweet and easy going Loves walks and car rides Barks at visitors Vision and hearing loss Ongoing allergy medication Not suited to apartments

Not Quite Ready Yet

These are ACDR's most recent rescues. They are not yet ready for adoption. Once they've been vetted, settled into foster care, and are ready for their fur-ever home, you'll see them here.

Don't see your match? Send an application anyway and tell us you'd like to be considered for any dog that comes into care.

Compassionate Care

Home for Life

Some of our dogs will never need an adoption page, because they have already found their forever with us. Through our Compassionate Care program, ACDR commits to a dog for the whole of their life: every vet visit, every meal, everything they need.

Our IVDD Warrior

Frankie

Brave on four wheels.

Frankie is our IVDD Warrior. Intervertebral disc disease took the use of his back legs, but never his spirit: he zooms through every day in his wheelchair with his whole heart out front.

As a Compassionate Care Foster, Frankie will remain in our care for the rest of his life. We cover his veterinary care, his food, and every other necessity for as long as he needs it. He is not waiting for a home. He is already home with us, and your support is what keeps his wheels turning.
